Review: The Nintendo Wii Console
Unlike Xbox and PlayStation, with Nintendo Wii, simple is good. Where Xbox and PlayStation have gone overboard with more graphical capabilities in the consoles, Nintendo Wii provides a system that is easier to handle. Wii also uses a device which resembles a normal TV remote rather than a gamepad, which is very different from Xbox and PlayStation that use conventional controls such as directional pads and controls sticks.
The console can be easily set up with an HDTV and comes with a cradle to mount it vertically. It consists of a sensor bar along with composite AV cables. However, if you want to take full advantage of the high-definition you will have to buy a set of component cables which support higher resolution.
With dimensions of 1.75×6.25×8.5, when placed horizontally, the console is smaller than expected and does not occupy much space. This enables you to move it around the house as desired. Place it next to your desktop or simply carry it next to the television. White is the only color that is available in the market. However, looking at the current trends, more colors are likely to hit the market in future.
The console comes with an internal memory of 512 MB along with Virtual Console titles. Well, that memory will obviously not last forever, and you can increase it through the Secure Digital card slot provided in the console. SD cards being cheap it’s a great feature incorporated by Wii compared to the proprietary cards used by older systems.
Navigation through Wii can be done through the Wii Channels. The default channels include news, weather forecast, message and photo channel. The Home page is the default gateway and allows you to access disc-based GameCube and Wii games as well as Virtual Console Titles. The best part of the system however is the motion sensing capability allowing you to play Wii-games. Considering all these features, Wii is worth a buy if you are looking for a cool multimedia system which can do just about anything!
