Video Games Right From Scratch
Raph H Baer is considered to be the father of video games console. He came up with this idea while sitting bored at a bus stop. He later converted this idea into a four page document. He created the Magnavox Odyssey which is the first video game of the world.
The Magnavox Odyssey was launched in the early 1970s. It did well in the market but the video games became truly popular after the introduction of Pong from Atari. Thus Atari and Magnavox’s rivalry began, each launching better version one after the other. These are known as the first generation video games.
In the late ninety seventies we see Fairchild coming up with Fairchild Video Entertainment System. It was the first programmable video game system which had plug in cartridges that had read only memory and microprocessors. It is said that it laid the foundation for more successful systems.
This bubble of the video games industry burst in the much later part of the ninety seventies when older manufacturers of the obsolete and outdated versions of home consoles had to sell off their inventory at cheap prices. There was a short-lived boom in the video game in the video game industry with the launch of Atari’s Space Invaders however.
In the early to mid eighties were disastrous for the confidence in the video games industry. There was a flood of low quality cheap video games in the market. This crash was overcome by revolutionary technology introduced in the US market by Nintendo Entertainment Systems. Their Super Mario Brothers was very successful in the fourth generation of consoles.
In the early nineties we see rivalry between Sega which was an American owned Japanese company trying to outdo Nintendo. Each company wanted to increase its storage space in its multimedia games. These games were known as the fourth generation video games.
The late nineties saw the emergence of the fifth generation of video games which were more visually appealing. There was a shift towards PC based computer games which came in CDs. There was an increased trend towards using flash drives for data storage and also online console gaming. PlayStation and Xbox dominated this scene.
The seventh generation of video games used the latest technology. The highly popular video game brands were the PS3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii. All these games supported the standard wireless controllers.
