How could a conversation about this start without mentioning the Mario series of games introduced by Nintendo at the time of its release?

What started out as Super Mario Brothers has blossomed into a mega sensation, almost as big as Mickey Mouse was back in the age of cartoons. Between Mario Kart, the Smash series, and so many others, it’s clear that the reach of this concept has broadened beyond anyone’s imagination.

Every sports lover has played John Madden football at some point in time. EA Sports has created the most realistic football simulation in the world, and no brand can seemingly compete with it. Madden has ruled the world of football video games for almost twenty years now.

Amazingly, this game continues to improve with each release and the sports world simply couldn’t imagine a year gone by without a new Madden release. Even his name has simply become synonymous with the video game.

Eternally Recognized Video Game Series

February 10th, 2010

When you think back to some of the video games from your childhood, there are likely some games that still have newer versions being released to this day. These are extremely successful franchises that seem like they could go on forever.

I thought I’d take a few moments to review some of the finest series of games that we’ve seen over the course of the last 25 years since the emergence of Nintendo. These games may extend across multiple platforms, of they may be specific to just one.

Many people would believe that Mario is the most recognizable video game figure in the world. Being that Nintendo’s Mario Brothers series was one of the biggest early successes out there, I would tend to agree.

When Nintendo was released, many people received Super Mario Brothers, a complimentary game, with the system. Little did people know that Mario and Luigi would turn out to be two of the most recognizable video game figures in the history of the genre. There have been so many releases in this series on different platforms, and the brand shows no signs of slowing down.

If you’re a football fan, there’s little doubt in my mind that you’ve played or owned John Madden football at some point in time. This game made its debut on the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo in the early 90s, and it remains the most popular football game two decades later.

The most impressive aspect about this game is the fact that it still gets better each year. With high expectations running rampant with each release, EA Sports rarely fails to please its base of users, and that’s quite impressive for a game that maintains the same basic premise in each release.

In the adventure realm, the Grand Theft Auto series has most definitely made its mark. With a handful of releases that have us fighting crime in a number of different cities (and occasionally getting into a little mischief ourselves), this franchise has captured the imaginations of millions of gamers around the world.

This game has attracted legions of loyal followers who simply can’t get enough of the action. When a new release comes out, this game is often sold out for weeks.
