Tennis video games can capture the true essence and fun of the game is done properly. SEGA, has just done this with a new installment to the arcade tennis game, Virtua Tennis 2009.

With the new title comes many new features that should help to again vault this title to the top of the rankings, while also endearing the throngs of supporters the title has built up over the years. Building on its strong past and high reviews, the Virtua Tennis series offers another advantage. Virtua Tennis 2009 maintains fantastic accuracy and realism of game play that vaults it over the competition – mainly in the forms of the Grand Slam tennis by EA Sports, and 2K Games’ Topspin 3.

As a player you have more control over your serves, and many of the players exhibit habits and styles that are similar to well known players on tour. While playing Virtua Tennis you also have the ability to compete in Davis Cup matches.

Options also include refining your skills with 12 unique mini-games that test your reflexes and allow you to prepare for competitive online play. One of the best parts is, that the new system is compatible with the new Wii Motion Plus technology!

As a player, you’ll have the option of hitting the courts with the unique styles of many of the world’s top tennis stars. This game is compatible with all popular video game consoles, such as the PLAYSTATION 3 computer entertainment system, Xbox 360 , PC, and Wii – Virtua Tennis 2009 will be available starting in May of this summer.

Some of the highlighted new features include:

New Players and Courts – You have the option to play with or against more than 20 of the best players from past and present. The player list includes Maria Sharapova, Andy Roddick, Rafael Nadal, or even Bjorn Borg or Boris Becker and more, along with seven new custom players. Venues have be radically updated as well as Davis Cup Locations.

New World Tour Rankings and Online Play – With the PS3 and Xbox 360 online system you can compete to become the world wide Virtua Tennis Champion. Also, as you win these tournaments you can choice to purchase items from the shop, there are over 800 items up for purchase.

Enriched Gameplay – Virtua Tennis has three dimensional crowds and realistic court side views that really get you into the game.

Challenge on the Wii

May 30th, 2009
by Patrick Daniels

There are plenty of racing games available to play on the big three home video game consoles, but there are none any more fun than Excite Truck for the Nintendo Wii. You can have all the racing sims you want, give me an arcade racer any day.

Even though the Wii is not quite as powerful, Excite Truck is an arcade type racer game similar to but not quite as viewable as the Playstation 3 game Burnout Paradise. Without the extra power, the Wii developers still succeeded in bring the sense of speed necessary for this game. There are different challenges depending on what level you’re on, and split screen mode gaming with a friend is the best time.

On this Wii game you turn the remote sideways like a classic controller for the motion control. These controls are excellent, not just an add on, you don’t use the buttons you move the remote back and forth like a steering wheel.

Part of what makes this game outstanding is that the motion controls are excellent, better than some games released after this release. If it weren’t for the controls it might not be as much fun because you would go through all of the tracks too quickly.

This game is built for racing with a friend and perfecting the use of the motion controls. You have to earn silver and gold stars to open new tracks and the game rewards you for driving as recklessly as possible. You want to drive dangerously in order to earn more stars, that way you can unlock new areas and better tracks. It is also a way to gauge how well you are doing against your competitors. There are no explosions and you get to reset back on the track. What the game lacks in depth, it makes up in fun and enjoyment. If games are about fun then this one hits the mark and is much more fun than it has a right to be.

A Game For Fitness?

May 27th, 2009
by Patrick Daniels

Can a video game help you lose weight? Can it help you get in better shape? If it is Wii Fit, it sure could help. It doesn’t promise to be a cure all and to help replace real exercise and good eating habits, but it could help. Like a lot of Wii games, although it is not technically a game, it is meant to get you off of the couch and to get you active and moving around. It doesn’t promise to cure all of you problems, but it is a good step in the right direction by making healthier choices.

You start by selecting a Mii character to represent you, you get on and off the board as it directs you to measure your size. A lot of us see our Mii get a little fuller as it represents you and your weight, kind of a drag. It then has you do some balance things and it determines your fitness age, it can be higher or lower than your chronological age. After that then you’re able to access other games such as ski jumping and tight rope walking.

The exercise routines are not too difficult and are not meant to intimidate the player, but the yoga poses are a little bit more complicated and difficult to master. The game keeps track of all of your statistics and measurements, keeping track of what you have accomplished. By doing certain exercises and activities, the player unlocks more mini games and makes other activities available to play.

The game uses a balance board that comes with the game to do the activities. It is able to measure weight and pressure to determine if you are centered or balanced on the board. You can’t jump on it, but you can stand on it and step on it. It is also compatible with some other games like snowboarding and skiing and skateboarding.

One of my favorite games of the many games included is the ski jump. This gets you in a squat, then you glide down a ski ramp, staying centered and balanced, then extend at the end as you push yourself into the air. Here you hold it as long as you can to gain as much distance as possible. It’s very entertaining to see how far you can go, and it realy does work your legs.

LEGO Has Done It Again With Their Batman Game

May 26th, 2009
by Patrick Daniels

I don’t know why it is so, but I never seem to get tired of any game with the word Lego in it. I have enjoyed, along with my kids, both Lego Star Wars games as well as the Lego Indiana Jones game. Now, with Lego Batman, I think that they have gone in the right direction again.

The graphics, especially the vibrant, clear colors in high definition on the PS3 are gorgeous. They are probably the best looking of all the games in the series. The game play remains basically the same for this installment, and that’s okay. There is no reason to make drastic changes to something that works.

It is an appropriate game for all ages, and any level gamer. It is a good game for younger players, that no bother about Batman, and older players have have been life long fans.

The extras and hidden characters are plenty and should take many plays through to complete. The ability to drop in and out at will allows for two player fun without the hassle of one person getting stuck, and if that person is of a different skill level, he can drop out and let the AI do the work for that segment of the game. It is a good game to introduce new fans to the Batman story by introducing many of the classic characters. There are so many good characters to pick from the comic books and movies that the developers were even able to get some of the more obscure characters for the player.

The time put into development, comes through during the game play. It is also not the last game in the LEGGO series. I have recently read that the LEGGO franchise is working on a Rock Band game, with LEGGO characters. It is a way to introduce the music genre to a younger audience. LEGGO games are not extremely difficult, yet they are fun. Which is why I like them so much, they are the perfect game to play with my children and both of us truly enjoy the game play.

You’ll Go To Pieces Over LEGGO Batman

May 23rd, 2009
by Patrick Daniels

My kids, and myself have been a fan of the LEGO video games since the first LEGO Star Wars game out. Now with the new LEGO Batman game, it it clear that LEGO has made another excellent game.

There are numerous extras and hidden characters. Holding true to the LEGO game play, you have the ability to switch out characters making for a fun two player experience. All your classic Batman characters are in the game, and there are many not so well known characters from the comic books included.

It digs deep into the mythology of the franchise and as a fan I am thankful that they put so much effort into the development of the game. I know that his wont be the last in the Lego series; in fact I read just this weekend that they are developing a Rock Band game around the Lego characters. That is another good way to bring the younger gamers, who may not have had any interest in the music games, into the genre. These games aren’t supposed to be world changing or particularly difficult, but they are supposed to be fun and that is why I like these games so much, because they are fun, for kids and adults alike.

30 Rock Rocks!

May 23rd, 2009
by Patrick Daniels

There’s some decent comedy out there but when you really want to enjoy yourself you must watch 30 Rock. This show is very popular and rates high in NBC comedies, only falling to The Office. The forth season is just beginning and it is maintaining it’s appeal just as in the first season. The DVD’s are available for first through third seasons, you should be sure it becomes part of your DVD library.

This show is about a TV show shot at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. The lead character is Liz Lemon who’s played by Tina Fey who is a creator and writer of the show. Her character has minimum social niceties, is charged as head writer with keeping the rest of the characters out of trouble, and she’s a workaholic.

Tina Fey has a boss on the show played by Alec Baldwin, who doesn’t want to deal with the difficulties of a TV program so he relies on her to keep everything moving. On the show the writers are every bit as difficult as the actors and have a sizable role.

Tracy Morgan of SNL fame plays Tracy Jordan, a movie star that has been given the biggest role on the variety comedy show that Fey writes. He is not what you would call normal, and needs to be kept track of for most of the day and can’t be left to his own devices otherwise he will cause trouble. All of the actors and actresses need this kind of supervision.

The show is one of the funniest shows on television and has only gotten better as it has had time to develop its characters. There is no reason to miss this show and the DVD release makes it easier to get yourself up to speed on all of the misadventures of the last three years. Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin have a chemistry that is easy for them to play off of. Tracy Morgan has finally found a role that he can play and works perfect for him. He looks like he is having loads of fun.

Twilight Princess Rocks

May 23rd, 2009
by Patrick Daniels

Nintendo has hit a homerun with the new Zelda game called Twighlight Princess. It encompasses all the knowledge the developers have used in the past to create the best game of this series.

Whether you play it on the Gamecube or the Wii, you get an almost identical experience except for the motion controls on the Wii version. These motion controls are not just added on to be there, they actually add to the experience. Although the Gamecube is missing these extra features, it is still the same game and is just as fun and entertaining. The graphics for the two games look identical and are the best that the series has ever looked.

With the impressive detail Link and the enemies are more realistic than ever. Link is gaining a more mature, tough appearance than before. With fabulous motion controls and graphics it’s great but the best Zelda feature is the boss fights, game play and puzzles. They’ve always been included in the Zelda series and this newest feature doesn’t disappoint anyone.

This game will keep you playing for hours, it has tremendous puzzles and boss fights along with the good game play. These Zelda dungeons have been designed really well, there’s no easy way to move through them as you wonder what’s around each corner. The boss fights are perennial favorites and this feature doesn’t let you down. You have to really think you’re way through using hidden details and solutions. You can’t just push the buttons, it takes more than that.

This is the best Zelda game in the series, not to be missed, and that is a big promotion considering how good the Zelda games have been. There are no better games for Gamecube or the Wii, and in the last few years it’s the best game on any system.

Wii Introduces Super Smash Bros

May 21st, 2009
by Patrick Daniels

A new game from Wii is exciting even the hard core gamers who usually aren’t Wii active. It’s called Super Smash Bros and it is doing very well. It includes all of the favorite Nintendo characters, who all have their own special warrior skills. This game has numerous characters and if you progress, you’ll unlock them as you go.

You can play against the computer with up to four players and over the Nintendo WiFi. It is at its most fun when you are competing against three other friends. All of the classic levels and stages are in this game including a few extra locals. You can even create your own levels and share them online with other people.

In addition to being able to play the fighting modes, there are plenty of other games modes. The game also includes a whole other adventure, platform type game. You can play it alone or with a friend and there are some things that can only be unlocked in the game. It is surprisingly long and involved and would be a whole game by itself from any other developer. It is just an added bonus on this disc and Nintendo didn’t cut corners in bringing extra value to your fifty dollars spent on this game.

This is by far the most entertaining and best looking of the Smash Bros games they’ve released. It has lots of adventures and brings alot for your money. Playing online is pretty easy because the game will match you up with other players, and you’d never know you were on line it’s so smooth.

I still can’t believe how much game they packed onto this one disc, it really is a marvel and a real value if you are looking to get tons of re-playability out of a game. This is the best in the series and should not be missed.

The Greatest DS System to Date – The DSi

May 18th, 2009
by Patrick Daniels

The world of hand held electronic video games has changed a lot since the original Game Boy system so many years ago. Today, the most popular portable game console has long been the Nintendo DS, especially among children and people who prefer Nintendo games over those offered by its primary competitor, the Sony PSP. Nintendo fans are sure to rejoice, then, with the many great new features of the latest version of the DS: the Nintendo DSi.

Like previous versions of the DS, the DSi features a durable clam shell design and two interior LCD screens. It makes sense, since these features are some of the biggest selling points of the portable system. The plastic clam shell helps the system withstand a great deal of abuse – great for clumsy young fingers and hands; the two screens allow for greater game play flexibility and many very cool options. Therefore, fans of the original incarnations of the Nintendo DS will not be disappointed by the basic layout of this latest system.

The Nintendo DSi, has also included a good deal of new features that will excite long time fans, as well as gain new ones. In keeping up with their competition, Sony PSP, Nintendo has equipped the DSi with wireless capabilities, from any WiFi “hot spot”.

The DSi features two screens, as all other versions did, but the screens are larger making for clearer graphics. It also has one of the biggest changes yet, two separate cameras! One is located on the hinge facing the user and the other is on the outer shell. The system can be used to take pictures, which can be stored on SD cards, inserted in the slots located on the back.

Like Nintendo Wii, you can use the DSi to log on to a “DS Shop” and purchase games, and more using “Nintendo Points”. This enables players to install game updates, purchase entirely new games, or try out different kinds of applications. This feature is sure to please any DS fan. With the DSi, Nintendo now offers one of the most vigorous handheld system ever.

The Yeah Yeah Yeah’s New Album Will Have You Dancing

May 18th, 2009
by Patrick Daniels

With gorgeous ballads such as Maps and fun freak outs like Date With the Night, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs have always left us wanting more. And that has always been exactly the problem. With all that passion and fiery intensity wrapped up in these three musicians, past albums Fever to Tell and Show Your Bones have always had a couple of amazing songs, but yet been otherwise disappointing.

It’s Blitz, has shown the YYYs in a new light. Instead of the edgy punk style they portrayed in the past, their sound is now clearer and delicate. It includes a mix of synthesized tracks and ballads. Karen O fans will not be disappointed as her incredible energy and dynamic psyche shines through in every song.

Its Blitz demonstrates, composer Nick Zinner’s. Zinner produces what a unique sound, and with the vocals of Karen O, It’s Blitz is sure to be a hit. If you heard the track Runaway, you probably would recognize it as a YYY song due to the vocal of Karen O, it is a slow moving song with a piano melody.

Immediately following ‘Runaway’ is a track entitled, Dragon Queen, It’s an upbeat pop sound perfect for the dance club scene. Although the new dance beats have taken YYY fans by surprise, they are inclined to agree with Karen O, when she stated “How are you not going to get high, high?”, by the catchy Dragon Queen beat.

As also with YYY, ‘Its Blitz’ gained it’s beauty with the tiny details that are in each song. Fans are impressed by YYYs chilled out version of themselves, while still maintaining the energy and uniqueness that have made them famous.
